This video is from the Discovery Channel’s Time Warp series. It is a fascinating look at the physics of water. This is filmed at 2,000 frames per second, and then shown at about 30 frames per second, so about 67 times slower than normal. What you see is a drop of water held more or less spherical by surface tension. It first appears to sit on top of the surface of water due to a thin layer of air between the drop and the surface. As the air gets pushed out of the way, the water drop comes in contact with the surface and they merge. The force of the merger causes a part of the original droplet to be cut off, creating a smaller droplet and the process begins again until the droplet becomes small enough that its entire volume is merged into the surface. Beautiful to watch!
